Simon Spillett Quartet

‘A formidable musician and composer playing and writing in an uncompromising hard bop style.’ – Jazz Review.

Simon Spillett has established himself in recent years as one of the most distinctive and dynamic tenor saxophonists around. His mentor was the celebrated clarinettist and tenor saxist Vic Ash, but his playing recalls another star of 1950s bebop. His driving and energised style has often been compared with that of the late Tubby Hayes and his approach shares a similar love of dare-devil tempos and all-out intensity. Simon is much in demand for festivals throughout Britain and his CDs on Woodville, starting with Introducing Simon Spillett in 2007, have received wide acclaim, the follow-up, Sienna Red, having been Record of the Year in Jazz Journal’s Critics Poll, one of many awards and nominations to come Simon’s way.

Simon appears at The Mailbox at 12:30pm and at The Lord Clifden at 7:30pm on Thursday 11th.
