‘When was the last time a bundle of youthful energy, polished musicianship and originality like Tipitina landed on the mat unannounced? It’s quite disconcerting.’ – Dave Gelly
Tipitina are regulars at the Birmingham festival. Singer Debbie Jones and pianist Justin Randall, have had several albums released, including the highly successful breakthrough CD of 2008, I Wish I Was in New Orleans. Debbie’s background in gospel music (with the One Voice and Urban Voice choirs) has enabled her to front highly successful Choir Workshops at the festival, while Justin’s devotion to the New Orleans professors in no way inhibits his comprehensive mastery of piano styles. As for the group’s versatility, as Paul Jones says of the CD, it moves ‘from Tom Waits to Nat ‘King’ Cole to Chris Kenner to Doris Day/Mama Cass (oh, all right then, Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald) in the first four tracks.’ Tipitina have also featured in Festivals in Segovia and Madrid in Spain.
‘A wonderful CD, it superbly captures how this incredible band sound au naturelle…phenomenal 10/10 ‘ -Blues In Britain
