The elegant and modern Palacio de Ferias y Congresos was the focus of much of the fine jazz to be heard, while the fabulous Granhotel Guadalpin was the hub of all the social activity with jazz sessions, cocktails, sherry parties. poolside merrymaking and impromptu parties breaking out all over.

Old Town Marbella   Marbella   Doctor Teeth   Doctor Teeth
Jazz in Marbella's picturesque Old Town was a
particularly chilled-out festival feature-
this is Plaza d'Africa
Again the music invades Plaza d'Africa with Doctor
Teeth Big Band holding sway.
The ebullient men of Teeth take a cooler in a shady grove....
....while for only a passing moment they attempt to look
just a little serious.

Digby Fairweather   Bruce Adams   Bruce Adams   Bruce Adams
Digby Fairweather's Paseo Jazz Band was a big hit,
here's Julian Stringle, Digby with Costa-based Ken
Ingarfield on double bass and Frank Pantrini on
tenor sax.
Bruce Adams/ Alan Barnes Quintet were sensational,
unstoppable. Except for a moment of light refreshment,
that is. Matt Miles, John Donaldson, Alan, Bruce and the
extremely inscrutable Ralph Salmins
The indefatigable Bruce Adams gets them rolling in the
aisles-and that is only the band. Bruce fell in with the
owner of the hatshop, and .............Bruce his choice of
headware. Don't ever say that Bruce hasn't got a sense
of humour!
After days of non-stop ribbing about the headgear,
Bruce Adams tries to divert attention from the offending
titfer. It has to be said, it might look bizarre, two horns
at one embouchure, but be amused- it sounded great.
Bruce is incapable of being unmusical for even a moment.
Dennis Rollins   Dennis Rollins   Dennis Rollins
Birmingham-born Dennis Rollins brought his romping
Badbone and Co to feature at The Palacio.
The all action Rollins gets down to business with
Birmingham-based Hungarian double bass player
Zoltan Dekany.

For many, the highspot at the Jazz Festival were the
performances at The Marbella Jazz Suite by the Alan
Barnes All Stars.

Here's the first rehearsal of this all-new piece of music,
clearly not a time to be frivolous.

Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams, Simon Gardner and Mark
Nightingale..............Some parts demanded
serious respect.
Concentration rules, Alex Garnett, Alan, Bruce,
Simon, Mark.
The first performance of the Suite was at The Guadalpins
private soiree- John Thompson, Mark, Matt Miles, Simon,
Bruce, Ralph Salmin, Alan and Alex.

onstage at The Palacio.
Bruce Solo

Jonny Griffin

Bruce solos, Alan begins to relax.............
......before Alan solos to the immense and obvious joy of Alex.
Little Giant Johnny Griffin stormed into Marbella with
a sizzling set at The Palacio, splendidly accompanied
by his fine French Band. Apparently there weren't quite enough
silly hats to go round.
Clearly, the Chicago veteran tenor star has lost non of his
nerve.....
or vigour.
Count Basie Orchestra

  Bill Hughs
The world-famous Count Basie Orchestra directed
by Bill Hughes brought the Jazz Festival to a fitting
climax with two sensational sets.
Director and Basie Band veteran Bill Hughes was
omnipresent, and natural, relaxed and amiable
leader.....
.....he even found time to play some trombone - but a
little more next time, please, Bill.
Jackie Kelso

Legendary veteran alto star Jackie Kelso.
The man in charge of the bands fabulous engine-room.
Butch Miles is probably the finest big band drummer on
this-or any other- planet.
