Playing a key role in this year’s festival is the Blue Piano Bar and Restaurant in Edgbaston. The Blue Piano provides a suitably stylish setting for Welcome to the Land of Jazz, an exhibition of photographs taken at previous Birmingham International Jazz Festival by photographer-in-residence Merlin Daleman.
Action photographs feature such festival favourites as King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys and Festival Patron Digby Fairweather, plus bands from the Costa del Sol to Budapest. Merlin’s characterful portraits in appropriate festival settings include striking images of Dutch guitarist Nomy Rosenberg, tenor sax star Simon Spillett and powerhouse singer Debbie Jones of Tipitina.
The Blue Piano has a regular programme of music centred on its (unsurprisingly) blue piano, with resident pianist Tom Armitage and various duos and trios. During the festival this is supplemented by appearances by many different artists all listed below.
